Episode 8: Theology of the Body & Healing | Part 6 (Healing our shame)
Bob and Jake finish their series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) and healing by focusing on God’s design for humans to be unashamed. We were designed to bear God’s image, see as He sees, and love as He loves. Our healing journey requires us to bring the depths of our shame into the light and love of God so we can live our lives to the full.
Show Notes
Guiding Scripture
“The man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed.” (Gen 2:25)
“I was afraid because I was naked so I hid” (Gen 3:10)
Key Points
To understand healing we need an adequate anthropology which the Theology of the Body provides
We are not talking only about physical nakedness alone
The goal and experience in this is to see and be seen as God sees
Naked without shame is the key to understanding God’s plan for humans
The basic parts of a wound are: the experience/memory, beliefs, vows
We need to receive forgiveness and bring the depths of the shame out into the light
There are interesting parallels between the Garden and Eden and the Road to Emmaus
Our eyes need to be opened to the reality of our story
Healing is meant to free us to live our mission
Jesus shows us the path to healing of shame by choosing to keep our identity in the Heavenly Father
Practical Application
What is my experience of being seen by others (physically, spiritually, emotionally, etc)? What is my experience of seeing others (physically, spiritually, emotionally, etc)? How might these be different than God’s experience of seeing and being seen?
Try having a daily TED talk with yourself by noticing your Thoughts, Emotions, Desires at the end of every day. Invite Jesus into the areas that are distressing. Thanks Jesus for the areas that were a blessing.
Imagine a biblical scene that is meaningful to you and ask yourself, “What can this teach me about God and His love for me?”
When in your life did you begin to hide and live in shame?
What area of shame do you need to bring into the light?
Using your imagination, enter into your favourite biblical scene and open your heart to what God wants to show you or give you.
Make a general Confession that covers all the areas, experiences, and parts of your life
Where are you afraid to invite Jesus in your life? What do you believe will happen? Have you talked to Him about this?
